47 Years and Counting!

This week my husband and I are celebrating our 47th wedding anniversary! That’s 17,167 days, or 412,008 hours, or 27,720,480 seconds of marital bliss, with a few moments that we both remember being less than euphoric. As the calendar advances toward the date when our “till death us do part” vows were taken, we can’t help but reminisce: the wedding day that was hotter than blazes. . . the delayed honeymoon (when my spouse got so sick with food poisoning that I thought I was going to become a widow) . . . swimming in the ocean (long before Discovery Channel’s Shark Week brought fear to that scene) . . . coming to grips with the death of a father . . . plus more, and that was all just in the first year! I guess there really is a reason the traditional gift for a first wedding anniversary is paper. More specifically in our case, we were given a roll of toilet paper, and I do believe it was because we had worked through a whole lot of . . . well, you know. . . We had to learn how to fight fair and place our spouse’s needs before our own. Not too easy to learn at the young ages of 19 and 21, but onward we went.

Since that time, a lot has happened. We’ve moved twelve times, changed careers seventeen times, had seven children, seen three of our children get married, and we’ve become proud grandparents of six outstanding kids. We’ve buried a mother, five dogs, three cats, one bird, multiple hamsters, numerous fish, and came close to losing a child in a car accident. We’ve fought and made up probably more times than I could ever count. It’s been quite an adventure with my hubby and I am so thankful that we have so many memories and a colorful story to share as we become more seasoned senior citizens. So, this Tuesday, Tom and I will continue to reminisce as we celebrate our 47th year as husband and wife. How appropriate that the modern gift when celebrating year #47 is books! Just as reflected in Diane’s and my She Said He Said book series, every couple does indeed have a story. Tom and I have lived quite a story so far. What's yours?
