When I was reading an article this past week, I was surprised to learn that April is National Humor Month. So how long has it been since you’ve laughed? I don’t mean a simple “LOL” like on social media. I’m thinking of that “exploding” sensation of laughing until your sides ache and you need to remind yourself to take a breath before the laughter continues to roll. Has it been a while? Even a small chuckle can brighten a typical day. Did you know that, on the average, adults laugh only twenty-six times a day compared to children who laugh an average of two hundred times a day! It would make such a difference to infuse more funniness into our daily routines!
I hate to admit that it has been a long while since I have laughed hysterically, but I remember how great I felt during the comical moment. Diane and I had been working a long stretch, reviewing chapters of our upcoming sequel to Happily Ever After Everyone Else. We both desperately wanted to finish and get home for some well-deserved sleep but were feeling challenged finishing the task before us. Humor is exactly what was needed and when it magically appeared, the side-splitting laughter made all the difference that night! (Read our blog from October 25th to find out what brought us to that rich hilarious moment!)
So let me encourage you to laugh more and take yourself, and any simple predicaments you might currently be facing, a little less seriously. You'll even live longer to boot, as it reduces your stress and blood pressure while boosting your mood and endorphin levels. Need some help bringing humor into your daily life? Here are a few ideas:
Add laughter to your morning routine with a year-in-a-box calendar where you can read the joke for the day or if you are computer-focused, register to receive an emailed “joke of the day” to your inbox.
Turn off the news and turn on a show you find funny or make time to watch a funny movie like “Bridesmaids”, where it’s documented people laugh every 1 ½ minutes.
Spend more time with people who make you laugh! They're already talented in finding the humor in everyday life and they'll brighten your day!
Lastly, remember this new motto: an apple a day keeps the doctor away, and humor in life will alleviate strife! Happy laughing, everybody!
